SplashID, LastPass, KeyPass, and many others fit the bill if you only have your own passwords to track, or if you only need to track them in one place (1 computer, 1 phone, etc.). Once you mix a family in that needs some shared passwords or the like, you’re either paying through your teeth or juggling a few things that almost work the way you want.
So, I said screw it and I looked for a system that I can have full control over and offers a full range of features. Bitwarden isn’t the only offering, but it stood out due to having:
- No central password
- Database-driven
- Opensource
- Password not transferred, ever
- End-to-end encryption
- Local server hosting (self-controlled)
- Web interface
- Mobile App with fingerprint authentication
- Offline viewing
- Copy password without viewing it
- Password generation
- Two-factor authentication
- Shared/group passwords*
- Free**
